Pallbearers of Mr Ian Henderson Patron and Life member of Martinborough GC carry him past the 18th Green.

MARTINBOROUGH GOLF REPORT

By Jenny Boyne

The Club house was packed with family and friends, Eagles, Lions and Members on Tuesday afternoon for the funeral of our Clubs Patron and  Life member  Mr Ian Henderson. Ian was a member for over fifty years and was the Handicapper for many years. He played and assisted with the smooth running of numerous tournaments and would have to hold the record for being able to add scorecards almost as quick as todays autoscore reader. We were reminded that Ian was Dux at both schools he attended before embarking on a lifetime career at Wright Stephenson Stock and Station Agents, and through several mergers and acquisitions is now PGG Wrightsons. Ian was also very proud to be a member of the Eagles Society, for those who have no idea what those lads in the red jackets do, their Societys aims are to establish a fellowship of golfers, to foster the game of golf, assist in encouraging and instructing junior golfers, and promote sportsmanship, skill and etiquette. Active support is also given to charity, in particular the Halberg Trust, and in supporting Junior tournaments throughout the provinces, and yes women are now also members.

Our sincerest condolences to Ians  extended family and friends.

The nine holers have been busy over the last couple of Wednesdays  playing away. Firstly at Ngawi where they started the day at Pat Woods Holiday house for Morning Tea, and then after a round of golf they stopped into Lake Ferry Hotel.

There were twenty seven pairs entered from Bridge Pa in the north, RWGC in the Valley to Otaki on the Kapiti Coast. Thanks too to the local support from Riversdale Beach GC, Masterton, Carterton and our Club members. All square on the 16th Doug went one up on the 17th before Rick slotted a long putt on the 18th for them to head up the 19th hole which Doug won with a Par.

A small team led by Jaclyn Kras have been quietly working away at putting together a Reference book on the Club, the course, its history and most importantly the list of trophies and who donated them and what they are played for along with an address book – contact details of members who have given their permission for their details to be included. This is coming together and being peer reviewed to ensure it is as accurate as possible.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working alongside those involved with this exciting project.

MARTINBOROUGH GOLF REPORT

BY JENNY BOYNE

Finally a fine Wednesday and there was very little space in the carpark by 9am. Whats more the Bar was open, a rarity on a Wednesday, thanks to the efforts of Marie Scrimshaw. Marie joins the Exclusive One Club  with a superb Hole in One on the 6th Hole, and naturally picked up the All Teed Up NTP on that hole.

The Weeks comp HPMC Stableford was won by Jenny Wilkie.  In second place was Ju Allen on a countback from Player of the Day Marie Scrimshaw. Congrats to you.  Elaine Sutherland got the only two of the day.  Cafe Medici  NTP No 8 was won by Elaine Howe.

There were twenty two entered into the Tuesday Grumpies. The competition was Stableford with 1st place going to Andrew Lawler on 38 pts. 2nd Adrian Blackett 37 pts and Julie Warner 35points. Not sure what happened to the four who misplaced their cards, guessing they may have had a spot of bother.

The Selector was fizzing on Saturday afternoon after the mens Division  6 lads had a stunning win at Home over Judgeford 14/1, this has propelled the team to top of the table by 14 points with three away rounds remaining. These matches are all off the stick so sometimes the player can be the sacrificial lamb when the other selector puts you against their best player when you are usually down the list. In the Singles Chris Ranish 8/6, John Warner 6/5, Sheldon Mc Namara 6/5 and Randal Warner 6/5. Colin Whibley Smith 4/3, Mark Lucock 4/3, Alistair Boyne 4/3. Craig Andrews 3/1, Glen Schofer 1Up. In the four ball John Warner and Sheldon 6/4, Chris Ranish and Colin Whibley Smith 6/5 Randal Warner and Mark Lucock 5/3, Craig Andrews and Glen Schofer 1 Up , Derek Stephen and Alistair Boyne 2/1.

On Sunday Martinborough hosted the Womens Interclub Tilson Salver.  Playing on the home course had definite advantages with the women scoring 6 out of 6 against Castlepoint.  Kris Chamberlain 6/5, Sandra Petersen 3/2, Carol Parkinson 2/1 and Emily Loughnan 2 Up. In the four ball Kris and Sandra 3/2 and Carol and Emily 2/1.

The Men headed to Masterton GC to play Mahunga in Marquis Shield and finished the day  even and two team points each. Singles wins to Chris Ranish, Dean Scheaf, Paul Mc Kenzie, Garry Cuttance and Soli Noval. Alistair Boyne and Alan Heath all square. In the four ball wins to Dean Sheaf and Craig Andrews, Alan Heath and Paul Mc Kenzie. Chris Ranish and Randal Warner and Derek Stephen and Alistair Boyne all square.

This Friday the Club is Hosting the Wairarapa Womens Four Ball Best Ball Open and on Sunday four of our gals head to Wairakei Intl Golf Course to compete in the finals of the Kiwi Challenge. Good Luck to Marilyn MacKenzie, Jo Loe, Lyle Griffiths and Pam Messervy.

MARTINBOROUGH GOLF REPORT

BY JENNY BOYNE

The scheduling of Womens inter club has not been going too well, with yet another round of Silver and Bronze Pennants postponed this week. The Lansdowne gals did though have a beaut day on Saturday at Paraparaumu against Manor Park. On course before sunrise for a Tee time of 7.30am curtailed any thoughts of bar hopping. Foursomes matchplay on this course is no easy feat though gives one a feel for the slick greens. Only one win in the foursomes to Sereana Phillipps and Cheycoda Cocks 1 Up. The women though came into their own in the singles matchplay beginning at midday and play was spectacular with five solid wins. Leading the way  Zhuoyl Hu (RW) 5/3, Anita Karaitana ( MAH) 5/3, Pip Kirk (RW) 3/2, Sereana Phillipps (MSTN) 3/2 and Cheycoda Cocks (MAH) 2 Up. Overall 6/3 win which sees the team into the semi finals against Boulcott HFGC at Shandon on Saturday 5th May, they seem to enjoy this course and have beaten  their opponents here so make a note in your diaries and head along to support the team. The Retail nearby is pretty good too.

Our lads played Division 6 on Saturday at home against Pauatahanui with a very good win 12.5 to 2.5. Wins in the fourball to John Warner and Sheldon Mc Namara 4/3, Chris Ranish and Colin Whibley Smith 5/4, Gavin Lovejoy and Craig Andrews all square and Derek Stephen and Glen Schofer 1 up. The singles went 9-1 to Martinborough. Colin Whibley Smith 6/5, Sheldon Mc Namara 6/4, Randal Warner 5/4, Glen Schofer 5/4, Derek Stephen 3/2, Craig Andrews 2 Up, Gavin Lovejoy 2/1, Chris Ranish 2/1 and John Warner 1 up. The team is teetering at the top of the table by half a point with the postponed fixture against Judgeford at home this Saturday.

On Sunday the Marquis Shield team plays Mahunga at Masterton and at home the Club is hosting Riverside Cup with Martinborough playing Castlepoint. Good luck to you all.

Next Friday Martinborough is hosting the Wairarapa Womens Open four ball best Ball, get yourself a partner and enter. Check out our website on the home page for details www.martinboroughgolfclub.co.nz.
