Ladies Golf Newsletter #11 12th April 2015

Jean Hobbs one of our Life members has passed away in her 91st year. Jean, who lived for many years at Pahautea before moving to Waikanae was an active member of the Club in the 60’s 70’s, 80’s and the 90’s and is remembered fondly for her love and knowledge of the game. We also have Jean to thank, for her many hours of fundraising for our Clubhouse after the original was destroyed by arson in the early 70’s. Jean spent many hours alongside the other ladies picking and selling apples, organizing events including highly successful Cabarets and after making a couple of calls to those who knew her, recall her as a tireless worker and a privilege to know. Jean was Ladies Captain in 1974 and 75, wasn’t too bad at the game either, the Bronze Champion in 1978 and made a Life member in 1996.

Friday’s St Johns Tournament was very well supported with 28 teams of four playing Ambrose with just over $8,000.00 being made.

Carterton fortunately postponed Riverside Cup so we remain in number one spot on the point’s table after two rounds with 8 pts.

Tomorrow the Silver Pennant team play at Masterton against Otaki, the Bronze team has a postponement.

Wednesday Comp.

Waking up to rain falling put a few souls off and decreased our numbers this week to 21 players for the 3rd Qualifying round Captains Trophy, LGU, Putting and Shootout. Fortunately, the brollys were only up for a hole or two and with placing it was great to be hitting off some green stuff for a change. A good day by the writer saw her win the Comp with a Nett 65, 2nd Felicity Warren Nett 67, 3rd Sherry Weatherstone Nett 69 and 4th Marilyn Mackenzie Nett 71. Putting, the writer 25putts 2nd Sandra Petersen 26 Putts.

Ladies Golf Newsletter #10 30th March 2015

A glorious sunny day today hosting Bronze Pennants in Martinborough yielded some excellent results for our team scooping 5 ½ wins over Karori elevating us into the top half of the standings. Well-played team Sylvia, Jaclyn, Gretel, Lyle, Felicity and Sharon.

Black Sunday continued on Monday for the Silvers who played at Shandon against Royal Wellington and like the Men’s Marquis Shield team (11-1 loss), the Silvers were slaughtered, one win from the foursomes from Kris C and Sandra P., thanks girls for saving the down trou.

Four ladies went to Masterton to compete in the Wairarapa Open 18 hole stroke play last Friday and three came home with a prize. Well done to Lyle Griffiths, Jo Loe and Natalie Donaldson. The fourth played rather poorly (Club Captain) and was happy just to finish under triple figs.

We have had some great feedback to hosting the WW 36 hole tournament and appreciation for the contents of the bucket raffles. Thanks to all who contributed to the day.

Mixed fortunes for the pennants teams last week. The Bronzes struggled at Kapiti against Royal Wellington, with only two wins from our match play maestros Felicity Warren and Lyle Griffiths. The Silvers gals at Boulcott Heritage Farm played exceptionally well on the shorter and bunker populated new course with a cool 6-3 win against Masterton. 2/1 wins in the foursomes and three wins in the singles from Sandra Petersen, Bindy Mc Leod and Jenny Boyne and 2 halves from Sherry Weatherstone and Mariana Mc Dermott.

Lansdowne Trophy Cartinborough against Manor Park on their home course on Saturday produced mixed fortunes. While there were good wins in the foursomes from Pip Kirk and Sereana Phillipps 4/3 and Sharon Harper and Sandra Petersen 3/1, they found themselves being hammered in the singles with only one win from Wendy Rhodes 1 up and a half from Vicki Bain.

Five Ladies went to Carterton to Compete in their Open day on Wednesday and in a field of over 60 players all came home with a prize.

At home the course was playing somewhat different from the previous week, swathes of green patches have appeared and so heading toward Autumn the netts were truer to handicap. In 1st place in the LGU and shootout was Gretel Dick Nett 71, 2nd Sylvia Beavis 73 on a c/b Sharon Jephson 4th Jan Lankow Nett 76 on a c/b to Robyn Blackett, Marilyn Mackenzie and Adele Cairns. Sharon also slotted the only two and won the Medici Voucher for nearest the Pin on 8. Gretel won the All Teed Up Nearest the Pin on Number 6.

Newsletter # 8 15th March 2015

If you ventured down to the Club on Saturday you were in for a treat, Women’s Golf in the Wellington region has a good future if watching these teenagers is anything to go by, though a couple of the seasoned gals nudged them out of two of the three top prizes on the Table in the Wellington Women’s 36 hole Stroke play Championships. Julianne Alvarez an 18 yr old from Manor Park playing off a +3 won the Miss M Young Trophy with a Gross 142, one over in the morning round and 5 under in the afternoon, really is in a league of her own.   Setting her sights of being a member of the Wellington Masters team, our Club President Kris Chamberlain had an exceptional round in the morning to win the best Nett with 138 from rounds of 67 and 71. Glenn Hayward from Paraparaumu Beach won the stableford with 79 points from her gross 151. Placings- 2nd Gross Wairarapa College Y12 student Sam Maree Brown (Royal Wellington) a tad disappointed with her 84 in the morning got into the zone, storming home in the afternoon with a 68. 3rd Gabrielle Palazo from Manor Park with 160, and in 4th Fiona Mc Bride from Otaki with 162. 2nd Nett Celia Howden from Karori 141, 3rd Erika Cui who is also another one to watch from Boulcott Heritage Farm 143 and 4th Saida Wilson from Judgeford 145. 2nd Stableford Martinborough’s Sandra Petersen 77pts, and her playing partner taking 3rd place Tira Habib, another delightful teen on the scene from Titahi Bay with 75pts. Yuriko Manabe, a regular and valued supporter of Martinborough tournaments won the Silvers Nearest the Pins on 6 and 12.

Bronze division though small in number was closely contested, and surprisingly, not a soul from the Wairarapa. 1st Gross Britta Fraser, undeterred with the afternoon drizzle completed the day happy with her 182, Runner up Anne Alkema 192. 1st Nett Mary Yarall two under Nett 142 and runner up Irene Murphy on nett149. Best Stableford Robyn Cohen 76 pts also won Nearest the Pin on Number 8 and Runner up Jenny Lloyd with 63pts.

Thanks to all the players who supported this tournament.

On Sunday Wellington played Wairarapa for the Julie Murphy Jug and Wellington took the silverware over the hill with a 4 ½ to 3 ½ win.

A good win on Friday at Riversdale against Masterton, Lyle Griffiths continuing to crush her interclub opponents with a 7/6 win, awesome Lyle, Jaclyn Kras 4/2, Felicity Warren3/2 and Sylvia Beavis 2/1.

 Wednesday Comp

Natalie Donaldson watching her handicap take a tumble Nett 64 and a 4-way tie in third Carol Parkinson, on a c/b to Jill Baker, Lyle Griffiths and Kaye Mc Isaac.

Martinborough Wednesday Golf Report (04 March)
Eleven pairs completed the Srixon Nancy McCormack 36 hole foursomes with some sizzling scoring in the morning round as the sun turned it up a notch.Young guns Ju Allen and Natalie Donaldson may have had the odd blip in their 2nd round but held off the seasoned pairs to take line honours by one shot. A formidable 61.5 Nett in the morning, including an eagle on the Par 5 2nd hole from a chip in by Ju. A 68.5 in the afternoon gave them the 2015 title from Diana Donald and Robyn Blackett 62.5 and 68.5 (131).  A two-way tie in 3rd spot on 133, Lyle Griffiths and Mariana McDermott Nett 63.5 am and 69.5 pm and hot favourites Sharon Jephson and Adele Cairns recording exceptional rounds of Nett 66 and Nett 67.The stableford round was won by Alice Forward with 45 points, Sylvia Beavis having two twos and 42 pts.Interclub Monday 02 March
Great results from the Bronze Pennant gals with a 4-2 win against Te Marua at Karori. Gaye Didsbury 4/3, Sylvia Beavis 3/1, Marian McKenzie taking an early lunch break dismissed her opponent 8/6 and Lyle Griffiths 4/2.The top two Silvers Pip Kirk and Kris Chamberlain found themselves having to give 11 and 12 shots to their counterparts from Boulcott Heritage Farm making it tough for the foursomes with Kris’s opposition getting a hole in one, though this did help with focusing on the other task resulting in a singles win to Kris 3/2.

Sherry Weatherstone notching her singles win after only 11 holes 8/7, had to stay out in the sunshine to get the only half in the foursomes with her partner Sandra Petersen, and Jenny Boyne 3/1.

Martinborough Ladies Newsletter 8th Feb 2015

Martinborough Ladies Newsletter #3 Sunday 8th February 2015

The rain did fall on the other side of the Hill last Monday for the first round of Interclub, though welcome by the residents of Waikanae, it did cause grief for the Silvers opposition Shandon, with the Marty girls coming home with a 3/3 in the 4 Ball and 31/2 wins in the singles. Not so fortunate were the Bronze players battling Masterton at Royal Wellington stalking those magnificent greens hampered by gale force winds and driving rain they were a tad disappointed to finish with only 2 wins.

On Wednesday we held the first comp of the Year LGU, Captains Trophy and Shootout, which saw 33 players, take to the field with some having a few problems with the run and the rough, while others just enjoying themselves posted sizzling scores.

Results all divisions 1st overall Elaine Howe Nett 66, 2nd Natalie Donaldson Nett 67, 3rd equal Jenny Wilkie, Lyle Griffiths and Sharon Jephson all on Nett 68.

All Teed Up nearest the Pin on number 6 going to Jaclyn Kras, while Mariana Mc Dermott took out the Medici Café voucher for a coffee and cake nearest the Pin on number 6.  Thanks to our to Nearest the Pin sponsors for their ongoing support. Only one player with a two, Jenny Boyne using the putter from within the bunker on 8.

Golf seems to have several rules and some are quite complicated, however the Rule around handing cards in for handicapping have had a review for 2015. For all Pennant and interclub matches that use handicaps, (Silver and Bronze Pennants and Riverside Cup, all cards must be handed in to the Host Club for handicapping purposes. The exemption is Lansdowne Trophy, where you get to choose whether or not to as these matches are played off the stick. The Rules for match play at own Club are a little murky, Club Champs exempt as these are off the stick, with all others though you are encouraged to hand them in.

Changes to 9 holers

From the 12th February 2015, all 10,000 or so 9 holers will be given an 18-hole handicap; effectively it will be double your current one.

The first round of Riverside Cup is at Eketahuna against Carterton this coming Friday 13th.

On Monday 16th The Silvers are hosting Pennants in Martinborough, we would appreciate all Silver Players to assist.  Please confirm your availability to Sandra email

Bronze Players are heading to Masterton to play Kapiti.

Good luck to you all.

This weeks comp is Stableford, so all discs are in one box for a random draw.

Jill Bakers and Susie Matthews on Sandwiches and Pam Messervy and Alice Forward on Stewards.

See you all of Wednesday
