MARTINBOROUGH GOLF REPORT

The first round of Tilson Salver at Castlepoint was played in warm and sunny conditions, a stark contrast to last year where most abandoned their matches due to torrential rain. The format this year has changed to teams of four with players also playing four ball best ball matchplay. Our gals were outplayed by Carterton with Lyle Griffiths saving us with a very timely half in her singles.
 
On Tuesday we paid our respects attending the funeral of one of our Past Presidents- Bruce Johns who until quite recently enjoyed coming along to Thursday Club mid afternoon to have a catch up, a beer and to listen to the local banter. On behalf of the members we would like to formally express our sincerest condolences to Mrs Johns (Val) and the family, we too will miss him dearly.
 
The  Grumpies had a couple of partners joining them last week playing Bisque par. This Comp suited the winner Paul Riddiford who sailed in on + 10 from Julie Warner on +7. 3rd equal Bill Gordon and Paul Shepherd on +6. This week a number were absent attending the funeral.
 
On Wednesday the nine holers played the first round of Shootout for 2018. Sizzling scoring 1st Mary Herrick Nett 30, 2nd Jan Ferguson Nett 31 on a c/b to Billie Holmes. 4th Katrina Burgess Nett 32. All Teed Up NTP on Number 8 Jenny Tosswill and  Susan Stephens of Ray White  Real Estate NTP on Number 16 went to Ann Renall.
 
Elaine Howe our Womens Captain was delighted to see such a good turnout Wednesday for the first ‘serious’ game of the year.  LGU, 1st round of Captain’s Trophy and Shootout. On form were Marion Mc Kenzie with a Nett 65, Robyn Blackett Nett 66 and Jo Loe (who also got the only 2 of the day) with a Nett 68.  Nearest the pins were: All Teed Up No 6 Sandra Petersen and Cafe Medici No 8 Ju Allen. Marion’s score gives her one hand on the Kitching Cup, with two more rounds to go for the Best Qualifying round of the Captains Trophy.
 
This Saturday the Club is hosting the Wellington  Womens 36 hole Open Tournament, a few of our women have entered and we wish them all the very best. The Course will be closed on Saturday for the tournament and on Sunday morning for the Wellington V Wairarapa Julie Murphy jug. Head down there to watch some up and coming players, maybe the next Lydia.

MARTINBOROUGH GOLF REPORT

The Clubs and bag barely had time to collect dust over the Summer with both Mens and Womens Interclub commencing before the Clubs official Open day this year.

The Wairarapa Women have entered a combined team in this years Lansdowne Trophy Competition under the name Masterton with players from Royal Wellington joining the team.

This is great for Womens Golf in the Wairarapa. The last few years Carterton and Martinborough have combined and prior, Masterton had for a time their own team. This will strengthen ties within clubs and ensure we have a strong and highly competitive team in 2018. Disappointedly though there are only five Teams entered in this Comp, with most now fielding composite teams.

The first round on Saturday had the gals at Boulcott Heritage Farm against Paraparaumu wins in the foursomes  to Zhuoyl Hu and Pip Kirk 7/6 and Sereana Phillipps and Cheycoda Cocks 1 Up. In the singles matchplay wins to Pip Kirk 5/3, Wendy Rhodes 6/5, Sandra Petersen 1 Up and Cheycoda Cocks 1up, overall 6 to 3.

The Silver Pennant team played at Royal Wellington against Paraparaumu last Monday at Heretaunga with wins in the singles to Sandra Petersen 1 Up, Venetia Morison 3/1 and Jenny Wilkie, loving the course, her round included a birdie on the tricky 7th and five other pars, she successfully crushed her opponent 5/4. In the fourball pairing of Kris Chamberlain and Sandra Petersen and Venetia Morison and Marie Scrimshaw finished their matches all square.

The Men have posted two rounds prior to Opening day, both with home advantage. The first round against Masterton at the end of January saw the lads finishing with an impressive result 12.5 to 2.5, boosted morale as the opposition had all their guns playing. On the busy fair day they hosted Wainuiomata in the second round and the Selector was delighted with their performance winning 10.5 to 4.5. Man of the Match went to Randal Warner, the scorecard impressive, two bogeys and two birdies on the front nine and one bogey on the back to finish with a Gross73 and win his match 5/4. Big wins also to John Warner 5/4, Colin Whibley-Smith 5/4, Craig Andrews 4/3, Sheldon McNamara 3/2, Chris Ranish 2/1, Derek Stephens and his opponent had a great tussle finishing all sqaure. Fourball wins to John Warner and Bill Crook 3/2, Chris Ranish and Sheldon Mc Namara 4/2, Randal Warner and Colin Whibley Smith 3/2 and Chris Ranish  3/2 and Dean Scheaf 2 up. Narrow losses to the RD2 postie and his customer.

Opening day Ambrose on Sunday was a blast. Seventy five golfers attacked the Ambrose with vim and vigour and enjoyed some great prizes and conviviality.

The dinner was superb and the Entertainment from the Morison clan was a not to be missed or forgotten occasion .. brilliant by all accounts.

Having this man in their team gave them an edge, 1st Randal Warner, Davis Clarke, James Blundell and Emily Loughnan Nett 53.5.2nd Bill Crook, Gavin McFadyen, Rex McIntosh and Marilyn Mackenzie Nett 54.375 on a c/b to Andy Morison, Glen Schofer, Lachie Mcleod and Sue Dalton Nett 54.375 4th Guy Walmsley, Paul Harris, Neil Catherall and Karen Stephens Nett 54.625 5th Colin Whibley-Smith, John Dyckhoff, Rob McCreary and Mary Isaac with a nett 55.25 on a 8.75 handicap.

MARTINBOROUGH GOLF REPORT

The Mens Shoot out on Sunday was held on a brilliant Summers day, the mercury just kept on rising as the day wore on, wearing the players to a frizzle. The standard of golf overall was excellent and this hotly contested Competition was played in the usual very friendly spirit. The eventual two survivors for the last hole played brilliantly, both scoring Nett 62’s.

Nineteen set off number one and it was Gavin Lovejoy who  could not overcome a bad tee shot who was first to board the wagon. Morris Lubricants sales rep Guy Walmsey suffering from a stiff neck could not survive the three way chip off on number two and graciously slipped out. Number three takes no prisoners and Bob Tosswill went OB then nestled his next shot into the trees to end his chances this year. Hole number 4 and all but one skipped over the fence, Tom Hindmarsh suffered from a rare wayward Tee shot and was shown the door. Bull Hill did not suit Rocky Hudson, he  got into a tad of trouble in the open drain and it was on the cards that he was facing an uphill battle and tried as he did, was dismissed. The Par threes cause all sorts of panic and Malcolm Wood stuttered with his putting and the subsequent chip out. Captain Bill having such a good round thus far unfortunately went into the drain on 7, faltered at the chip out to join in the festivities with the other could of should of’s. Number 8 was unlucky for our Life member and  Vets Champion  Bill Jones, he was getting tired and whilst normally a very good chipper, did not survive this time. Keeping it in the family, Bills son in law Derek found himself joining the wagon after a five way chip off on number 9. Hole number 10 claimed Mark Lucock who had been playing very steadily, he too failed in a chip out with yet another grouping of five. Graeme Mc Isaac feeling the searing sun was shown the door on the green at the 11th. Colin Wibley Smith did not have a happy time on the Par three 12th  and took himself out of the challenge and is looking forward to 2018. Hole 13 unlucky for Bob Goodley, who did very well with his moon boot to last this far. Probably the hard luck story goes to Chris Ranish, whose pesky little white ball impaled itself on a branch just short of the green on number 14, and as he was unable to locate it , he ceded the hole only for it to fall from its resting place as the last player teed off the 15th. Tora Boyne may have birdied the 15th the day before but a risky decision cost him this time and he too was shown the door, more disappointed that  the chilli bin was bare. The last par three 16th hole  has caused angst for Ro Griffith for a number of years and this year was a repeat , three putting and missing out on the chip out. With the remaining three all on the green in regulation, Gary Cuttance unfortunately charged his first putt and missed the second on the 17th. Lining up on the 18th tee, it was a titanic struggle between Terry Fraei and Patrick Pedlow finishing with the win to Patrick, the Shoot out title and the Stacey Hartnell Memorial Trophy for 2017. Congrats to you Patrick and many thanks to Adrian and  Robyn Blackett for nourishing the players and spectators en route.

Bronze turned to gold when the trio from Martinborough won the Womens 36 hole Team stable ford silverware at the Champion of Champions held at home on the weekend. Our 2017 Bronze Champion Carol Parkinson tied for 1st place with a Gross 178  with Ange O’Gorman from Titahi Bay. More importantly Carol  contributed to the team 48 stable ford points . Congratulations to you Carol for being named co winner of the  2017 Wellington Bronze Champion.


Karen Shaw loved the challenge playing stable ford off the stick and repeated her first 18 holes with another finishing  runner up in the Bronze Nett with a Nett 133 and contributing 38 stable ford points. Pip Kirk our Silver Champion played well to contribute 54 stable ford points from her 36 holes, securing the team title with a total of 140 points, seven shots clear of Team Royal Wellington. Zhuoyl Hu their star player played sublime in the morning with a Gross 72 and her afternoon round of Gross 79 was enough to keep her in the box seat and the 2017 title of Silver Champion with a Gross of 151. Sher Gibbons her team mate was 2nd equal in the Bronze Nett and Cris Mc Gechan came in with enough stable fords for their team to take overall Runner-up in the Teams section.
Winner of the Best Nett in the Silvers was Karen Gray with Rounds of 64+75 Nett 139 on a c/b to Mastertons Sereana Phillipps 66+73 Nett 139. The Best Nett in the Bronze went to Marion Elliot of Miramar with (Rounds of 65+62)  Nett 127. Shannon was placed 3rd in the teams.

The 9 hole group and and the 18 hole Women held their Combined AGM and prize giving last Wednesday. It was great to see a number of past members come along to help celebrate the successes of 2017.
Results of the Nine hole group included The Most Improved player going to Lizzie Goodall, Best Stableford Ann Renall, Wilson Cup for Putting Sherryl Howie, who also picked up the Trophies for the Most Points overall, The Clark Shield for Shoot out and along with her playing partner Gaylene Selby Neal  the Thurlow Cup 4BBB. Best Nett went to Sandra Burgess and Jenny Tosswill won the Par Cup and the 2017 Champion A division. Her sister Debbie Coom won the B division and Sherryl Howie won the Handicap Championships.
Jaclyn Kras, Angela Busby, Karen Shaw, Kris Chamberlain and Sylvia Beavis were kept on their feet collecting the Silver in the womens 18 hole division.

The Bidwill Leckie exchange on Sunday went the way of the hosts, the Martinborough lads loved the tee to green play but stuttered when it mattered most- the putting. Hospitality was top notch and the trip home on the bus was merry.

The Club is hosting a Christmas Tournament on Saturday with the Club prize giving to follow. The Mens shootout is on Sunday and there is a 8 way chip off for the last 4 places.

The Tuesday grumpies competition this week was Stableford and Paul Shepherd had an absolute blinder sliding in on his magic carpet with a technicolour 49 points, from Guy Walmsley and Nick Allen on 42 points. Paul had a person best off the stick of 77. The Convenor reported that the Jugs for not making the ladies tees are still going well with 35 in the past month, good for the bar takings and a source of amusement for the lads.

The Nine hole group played a Par round with Leonie Wilde in great form winning with a +4 on a c/b to Sherryl Howie. 3rd Di Bunny +3 on a c/b to Jenny Tucker on a c/b to Ann Renall. Susan Stephens sponsored NTP on Number 16 went to Phil Reid.

The Mens Club Championships were played last Saturday and for the first time in a number of years we had a clean sweep of fresh faces in the finals. In the Seniors Chris Ranish formerly of Carterton played John Warner Masterton. Tension was building after the 35th hole and so it was still game on at the tee on the 36th John having the advantage of being 1 up, held his steel and won the last hole to go 2 up and the 2017 Senior mens Championship title. John is on a winning roll at the moment he recently won the Hawkes Bay 4-course Golf and Wine PaR NZ Tournament.

In the intermediates it was young Nick Morison emerging the winner after playing well in the morning he secured his first Club title on the 35th hole against Craig Andrews.

The Juniors finals between Ric Thompson and Malcolm Bridge is being played this week.

On Saturday Martinborough is hosting the Wellington Womens Champion of Champions, so pop down to support our Club Champions ,Pip Kirk, Carol Parkinson and Bindy Mc Leod competing against the creme de la creme of Wellington golf.

The annual Bidwill Leckie exchange is on this Sunday, Captain Bill Crook and the boys will travel to Heretaunga at the leisurely hour of 9.45 am for a light lunch before play commences just after midday on the manicured Royal Wellington Golf course where the fairways are like a velvet carpet.The format singles matchplay, four Ball best ball nett and a team 8 ball. Martinborough holds the Cup and so the pressure is on to return with it home to our Trophy Cabinet.

Christmas is just around the conner and there are a number of festive Tournaments coming up, last Wednesday we enjoyed the hospitality at Riversdale Beach GC, though the Martinborough lasses missed on the prize table, the raffles did find homes in the south.

Today at the Club is the Annual Thursday Clubs Smiddy Tournament in memory of the late Neil Smith who was a very respected and well liked member and past Club Captain. The Thursday lads have invited the gals along to play in their treasured tournament, though some of us will sadly have to excuse themselves, instead will be making an appearance on the drafting gate working alongside the other half…. the lamb prices too good to pass up this week.

To make the Cut for the Shootout, one puts themselves under so much pressure on Competition days not to have any blow outs in order to produce a reasonably good score, then the fun and games begin.

This year the women had 30 players vying for a spot and as we only compete over 9 holes, ten souls blindly engaged into the legendary Martinborough spirit of expect the unexpected.

First to fall was Mary after a few hiccups under the big Mac she was back on track before the ball decided to pause on the lip. Surviving the wilderness, tacking up the 10th fairway to the 11th green , Carol was delighted to find herself thrown a lifeline in a three way chip off, though the rope broke and with a big smile she gracefully slipped away. Captain Kris made a few mistakes on the 12th and with no shots was lead to the drinks cart to console her misfortune. Alison, new to the Comp cooked her goose on unlucky for her Number 13.  Silver sirens Angela and Sylvia both performed poorly on this hole with a deadlock chip off, they then putted with the crowd singing Happy Birthday to a departing Angela on the 14th.  The remaining five all played this hole to their handicap so we had what is believed a first, all in the chip off. The stage was set under the tress on the left of the 15th green, with only one going past the hole and a couple short of the green we said au revoir to Marie who was leading the sweepstake.  Boxing on to the 16th all had a good start on this hole, however Bindy was thinking of  Christmas and the putting turned to Eton mess. After a great tee shot on 17 Karen hung in there and it looked as though we would be having another chip out, only for her pesky ball to decide otherwise. Down to two and the commentary was hushed, play short or long, long at least the ball has a chance to go in the hole. A great chip by Sylvia put her in the box seat, Lyles chip gave her an opportunity to birdie, releasing a bit too quick rolled past up the hill. Putting downhill the ball stalled mid way and  facing a still ewe caused angst in the proceedings and the ball rolled past the hole, tapping in to finish. Sylvia nudging her ball close to the hole  before slotting her putt to win the Crown for 2017.

The Nine holers also played their Shootout on Wednesday and they too had a load of fun and on the final hole it came down to last years co Captains with Sherryl Howie the Winner and Mary Herrick having to settle for Runner up.

The Nine holers  also held their open day on Monday and were stoked to have  85 in the field after 3 pulled out at the last minute.

Thirteen Clubs were represented: Masterton, Carterton, Manor Park, Marton, Otaki, Paraparaumu Beach, Pauatahanui, Manawatu, Feilding,  Waikanae, Shandon and Kapiti and a number of our own gals from Martinborough .

The Prize table was groaning and the Club house was all decked out to welcome the Visitors.

The numbers of nine hole members is on the steady rise at Martinborough, we currently have 15 men and 40 women in our Clubs membership and these are a mix of new to golf and those who believe they may have run out of puff to swing a club and walk the 6 kms in a round. In saying that there are a bunch who play everyday, and while disappointing that there were no men competing this year it was great to see so many supporting the finals of our Nine hole Womens Club Championships last Wednesday. Sherry Howie and Jenny Tosswill kept the crowd entertained, Jenny Tosswill had her sister Debbie Coom on her bag and was under firm instruction from the family to keep Jenny hydrated and focused on the task at hand. Then a wheel fell off, literally I understand with Sherryls trundler, Katrina Burgess her caddie was quick to sort this mishap, for Sherryl the unwanted distraction did cause a wee lapse in concentration for that hole.   Jenny continued on to add more pressure on their close match and successfully won on the 16th hole. Congrats to you Jenny.

 

The 18 hole women held their finals the previous week. In the Silver Division it was between Kris Chamberlain and Pip Kirk, with Pip keen to retain the title, she started with two fine pars and birdied the 6th, though  did provide Kris opportunities  on the 4th, 7th and 9th, before  settling down to the task at hand, Pips card revealing a further two birdies and 4 pars to finish the mornings round with an 80. At the break with a solid lead she comfortably won the Title on the 28th hole.

 

In the Bronze A it was a tussle between Bindy Mc Leod and Carol Parkinson with Carol ahead by five after 27 holes, Bindy closed the gap before conceding on the 34th hole. The Bronze B finalists Marie Scrimshaw and Emily Loughnan had an interesting match with this pairing going all the way to the 36th hole with Marie emerging the winner.  Jaclyn Kras and Mariana Mc Dermott played in the Vets Comp this year, it was a close match and with youth on her side Jaclyn sealed the title on the 17th hole. Congratulations to all the Winners.

 

The Tuesday grumpies played a Par round  and although the conditions were great, there were nine jugs sold for not making the Womens tees! Results -1st equal  Sandy Bidwill, J D Smith and Bill Jago all on +6  4th Griff Page on +5.

 

The Cotter Rosebowl was contested for last Friday at Masterton by only four Clubs this year. The Womens foursomes stableford format doesn’t always give you the result you thought on paper would work. The course  and greens were great, though quite a few of us struggled with their short game, the fringes causing most of the havoc leading to wasted opportunities and all important stable ford points. Congrats to Masterton the 2017 winners . Martinborough were pleased to be announced in 2nd place after their lack lustre performance.

 

This Friday is the Rew and Mc Cracken Cup at Carterton six players Nett round and we are anticipating that all Clubs are able to field a team.

The Halberg day on Sunday has been postponed to 10th December, and coming up on the 4th and 5th November is the P and K 72/36 hole Mixed foursomes. To enter please check out our website www.martinboroughgolfclub.co.nz or phone 06 3069 076.

Over the past few weeks there has been a steady rise in the numbers of members playing on Tuesdays and we have seen a number of players reaping the rewards from playing very well. Results from the last couple of weeks . 1st Murray Blackwell on 43 stableford points 2nd Doug Fergusson on 40pts and 3rd equal Mike Hattrick and Terry Blacktop 39pts. From 3rd Oct 1st Alan Eagle on 42 points from Guy Walmrsley on 39 with Nick Allen and Andrew McKenzie on 38pts.

The nine hole Women played a stableford round last Wednesday 1st Sherryl Howie 19 points 2nd Julie Riddell 18 points.

The Mens Club Championships are underway and in the Senior Championships George Kirk has played his way into the semi finals, his next opponent is John Warner. The quarter final between Sheldon Mc Namara and Tom Hindmarsh will be a goodie and the winner of that match will be playing Chris Ranish in the other semi.

In the Intermediates the winner of coastal neighbours Bob Tosswill and Alistair Boyne will play number one seed Nick Morison in one semi, while Derek Stephens meets Craig Andrews in the other.

There a number of new or returning to golf players have entered in the Juniors along with a couple who are usually in the Intermediates. Ric Thompson v Nathan Fenwick will meet James Elworthy on the top half of the draw, while the winner of the quarter finalists Malcolm Bridge and Greg Dalton will meet  either Ro Griffith or Chris Wilkie on the other side to complete their semis.

A number of the gals from the District travelled up to Windross to watch Lydia and her pals who put on a fine performance, the weather unfortunately ruined Sundays viewing. While back at home the Club held the Jennian Homes Mens 72/ 36 hole Strokeplay Championships, Big thanks to the Kahui family from Wainuiomata Golf Club for contributing six players to this tournament, four playing in the pure format and and two of the lads Dads playing in the 36 holes.

The Spearman Burns brothers also returned, though they took the relaxed option playing in the 36 holes. A number of players from Royal Wellington also bolstered the numbers.

The Nett winners were the youngest and oldest competitors the field of 70.
