Tuesday Tome 21May24

Hello Golfers.

The Ngahau Trophy was on Sunday 19 May, and we had a total of 54 players including the Grandma’s, Grandpa’s, non-Grandma’s, and non-Grandpa’s. The Ngahau Trophies were won by the Captains – Andy Morison 36 Stableford points and Nicola Warren with 40 Stableford points. The Grandma walking stick was won by Marie Scrimshaw, Richard Pither the Grandpa’s walking stick both with 41 points. The non-Grandma’s division was won by Nicola Warren, and Guy Walmsley won the non-Grandpa’s division both with 40 points. A wonderful day was had by all.

The Saturday competition was Stableford on 18 May – with three entries. 1st Byron Hegglin 30 points, and 2nd Ben Turner 29 points. There were no Twos.

This weekend the Saturday and Sunday comp is Par on 25 & 26 May.

Men’s Interclub results Saturday 18 May – Division 2 were away to Boulcott’s Farm for their last round of the season, and still in with a good chance to top the table, coming away with 6 points. A credible result but with Te Marua getting 11 points at home, that was enough for them to sneak into the top position. Still a fantastic result finishing 2nd overall in Division 2. This is a team who only 2 years ago were in Division 4 and are now challenging for promotion to Division 1. Great result for Josh Hawkins and the team.

Division 10 were at home to Mahunga and only needed 2.5 points to win the division. Pete Gray and Shayne Cater were first out securing 3 points straight off the bat to secure the division win. The result of 11/4 was indicative of the solid performances put in through the season. Contributions across the team but a shout out to Steve Croft for an outstanding season as well as Murray Hill at #1, and Jackson Gray who is really maturing into a good player. Thanks to Tora and Shayne Hammond for running things and to everyone who played for either division, thank you for your contribution. (Shayne Cater)

18-hole ladies Results from Wednesday 15 May – A stableford round as there were some matches being played. 1st Jaquee Reid with 36, 2nd Diana Donald with 35, 3rd = Adele Cairns, Bernadette Pither, and Karen Delehanty with 33. Closest to the pin on #6 was Karen Shaw and # 8 was Susie Matthews.

Riverside was held at Pahiatua where we were all playing on reduced handicaps (from Martinborough), we’re giving shots in winter-type fairway conditions and playing the tricky Eketahuna course. So, it was tough! Nicola Warren had a win; Sandra Petersen had a half and Sarah Monaghan battled it out to the 18th. The next and last round is Friday 24 May at Riversdale Beach. I know that at least 4 of the team will be sporting the new caps that look so smart … thank you Emily Loughnan. They are on sale from the office for a reasonable $25. (Nicola Warren)

Grumpies – Results from the Stableford round on Tuesday 14 May – 1st = with 37 points Soli Noval and Rick Thompson, 3rd = Malcolm Bridge and Malcolm Wood, 5th = Mike Eastwood, Bruce Sollitt, and John Tanner. Twos went to Ed Elworthy and Andrew McKenzie on #6, Paul Riddiford on #8, and Malcolm Wood on #12.

Hello Golfers.

The Beef & Burgundy Ambrose held on Friday had a great turnout in favourable conditions. Thank you to everyone involved and the sponsors Eastwood Motor Group. Top honours went to Team Michael Bing, Shane Colton, Tiawharangi Aranui, and Lisa-Marie Ireland with a Net score of 56.25. 2nd was Team Doug Clark, Stu Taplin, Bevan Sweeney, and Matt Gloag on 57.75, and 3rd Team Jimmy McKinnel, Nigel Simpson, James Waugh, and Mark Gray on 58.12. The Women’s Longest Drive was Sandra Petersen and the Men’s, Owen Lloyd. Nearest the Pins #6 Brock Shute, #8 Tiawharangi, #12 Carol Parkinson, and #16 Zeb Livingston.

The Ngahau Trophy is on this Sunday 19 May and the Flyer is attached. The Ngahau Trophy was presented to the club by June & Guy Hume as a competition amongst the Committee, Ladies Committee, Staff, Administrators, and Life Members. Ngahau was the name of the Hume’s Pirinoa farm and coincidentally 19 May was the day that June & Guy married in Sydney during WWII (Thanks Nicola Warren for this extra info). There are separate competitions on the day – Grandma’s, Grandpa’s, Non-Grandma’s, and Non-Grandpa’s. Something for everyone.

The weekend competition was Medal/Putting on 11 and 12 May – there were no entries on Saturday. On Sunday, 1st Bob Schofield Net 65, 2nd Robbie Walters Net 69, 3rd on a countback Johnny Gray Net 72. Jason Shaw had a winning 28 putts, and got a Two on #16, and Bevan Sweeney got a Two on #8.

This weekend the Saturday comp is Stableford, with the Ngahau Trophy on Sunday.

Men’s Interclub results Saturday 11 May – Div 2 were away at Karori securing 4.5 points at what is traditionally a tough away venue. This drops them out of the top spot on the Div 2 table but only by half a point, so they are definitely still in the running to take out the division. They are away to Boulcott’s Farm this weekend; a big performance is needed! Come on team!!!

Div 10 were away to Shandon with an 11.5 win! An amazing effort that puts the team only 2.5 points away from winning the division outright. With Div 10 playing at home this weekend they are almost assured of a table topping win! What a season for both teams. Bring it home in the weekend boys! (Shayne Cater)

18-hole ladies Results from Wednesday 8 May – LGU and Putting, Juliana Allen & Karen Shaw won the putting with an impressive 29 putts. Closest to the pin on #6 was Jo-Anne Loe. Lucky as that ball hit the leaves on #7. Closest to the pin on #8 was Nicola Warren. LGU 1st Deidre Thomsen with 68, 2nd =Karen Delehanty & Sherry Weatherstone with 71, 4th was Marie Scrimshaw with 72. The Wenerei Trophy is awarded to the player with the most points from the Wednesday competitions. The 1st place getter gets 3, 2nd 2 and 3rd 1. Sharon Jephson is leading the charge closely followed by Louise Smith and then Felicity Warren. (Nicola Warren)

The Tilson Salver was played Sunday 12 May at Riversdale, and we had a 3.5: 2.5 win. Alison Tipler & Emily Loughnan were the stars winning their singles with large margins! Alison Tipler/Karen Shaw won the 4BBL and Emily Loughnan/Nicola Warren drew their 4BBl. The last Tilson game is in a few weeks and sadly, we will be handing the trophy to another club! (Nicola Warren)

Grumpies – Results from the Stableford round on Tuesday 7 May – 1st with 38 Stableford points Andy Morison, 2nd = Bruce Sollitt, Ray Matthews, David Kershaw all on 37 points, and 5th was Mike Topp on 36 points. Twos went to Malcolm Bridge and David Kershaw, both on #8.

Nearest the Pin was Pete Price, four Twos on #8 – Malcolm Wood, Pete Price, Johnny Gray, and Brian Russo, and Twos on #16 for Bob Tosswill and Rob Smith.

Sunday Club – Ngahau Trophy instead.

Notes from the Office – Cart pricing for Members is $20 for 9 or 18 holes. In line with WGI Guidelines for carts, if you have an injury and require a cart to get around the course, please provide the Office with a Medical Certificate, and the cart price is reduced to $10.

Hello Golfers.

BEEF & BURGUNDY THIS FRIDAY 10 MAY. We have some spaces available – don’t miss out! Get your entries in pronto.

The weekend competition was Par on 4 and 5 May – on Saturday there were no entries. On Sunday, the Birds Nest money came in and went straight out again. Congratulations to Emily Loughnan who got Twos on #6 and #8. Tony Taylor also got a Two on #6. 1st in the Par round was Seamus O’Sullivan, 2nd George Kirk, and 3rd Malcolm Bridge.

This weekend the Saturday and Sunday comps are Medal/Putting and Rounds 7 and 8 Shoot Out.

Men’s Interclub results Saturday 4 May – Div 2 were at home to Te Marua scoring a hard fought 7/8 result. While not the most desired outcome they are still top of the table, 4 points ahead of 2nd place. Div 10 was away at Te Marua winning the round 8.5 / 6.5. An awesome result that solidifies them at the top of the Division 10 table, 6 points ahead of 2nd place. With two rounds to go, both teams are still in the running to win their divisions, come on Martinborough!!!

9-hole ladies Results from Wednesday 1 May – Round 3 of the Sue Bunt Salver saw Alison Russell 1st with Net 27, 2nd Mary Herrick Net 30, and 3rd Sherryl Howie Net 34. Sherryl also got a Two on #12. The 9 Hole Par 1st also went to Alison Russell 6, 2nd Mary Herrick 5, 3rd Sherryl Howie 0. The Southey Honda tournament had a great turnout yesterday with lovely weather. Results to come next week.

18-hole ladies Results from Wednesday 1 May – The huge scores continue to be recorded … 1st Rosie Collins with 43 Stableford points, 2nd Louise Smith on a countback from Jenny Wilkie 42, 4th Jaquee Reid with 41 and Kelly Taylor with 40. Twos were scored by Julie Dondertman & Jaquee Reid (what a season you are having!). Closest to the pin was Sarah Monaghan & Angela Busby, and closet to the wiggly line on #14 was Nicola Warren.

The big news The National Team event was played on Friday 3 May at Te Marua and our entrants did us proud! There were 13 clubs represented and Team Martinborough – Sandra Petersen/Honor Clark & Jenny Wilkie/Deidre Thomsen came 2nd! with a total of 139 net points (winners 135). Sandra/Honor had 68 and that put them in 3rd place in the pair division. These are fantastic results so congratulations from us all. The format is 4 ball better ball nett stroke play. The first, second & third place teams get prizes, but we do not know what they received but hopefully they can report back on Wednesday. The best score is compared to the other NZ districts and the lowest wins a trophy (hence the title national teams!).

Pennants We played in wonderful conditions on the testing Boulcott’s Farm course. Martinborough 1 played Te Marua – Sandra Petersen/Carol Parkinson and Sarah Monaghan/Marie Scrimshaw won their 4BB, Sandra, Carol won their singles matches and Jenny Wilkie had a half. Martinborough 2 Ju Allen/Karen Shaw and Nicola Warren/Jaquee Reid won their 4BB, Ju had a half, Felicity Warren, Nicola and Jaquee won their singles. We have one more round to play on Monday 6 May … Best of luck to all the players.  Looking at the leaderboard, our handicaps and the number of shots to give has taken its toll and neither team will be in the final.

Landsdowne The final round was played on Saturday 4 May and Anna Possenniskie, Deb Donaldson& Sandra Petersen all won their singles and Deb/Sandra won their 4BBL.

The news of the week must be Marilyn Mackenzie making a hole-in-one on #16. It’s not her first hole-in-one, but her first at Martinborough. Those that were there were able to celebrate with her with champagne. Nicola Warren loves the collegiality of our group of golfers – Marilyn gets the hole-in-one, and the cheers from Honor Clark & Marianna McDermott could be heard by some on the course. Luckily, we were nearby, so using Karen’s phone, I called Christina and we organised for the champagne to be chilled. Everyone was so pleased for Marilyn and enjoyed the celebration in the sun!

Four intrepid 9-hole players journeyed to Feilding to take part in the annual 9 + 9 Challenge. This tournament is played over two days – with one side (9 holes) on Wednesday afternoon, followed by dinner and entertainment in the club house. Then the next morning the other nine is played, followed by lunch in the club house with raffles and awards! This was a thoroughly enjoyable two days away, with the Feilding course beautifully presented (showing the advantage of a decent rainfall over summer). This is an Open tournament – so there were both Men’s and Ladies divisions and with players coming from all around the Greater Wellington region – as well as far away as Matamata and the Coromandel.

Sherryl Howie distinguished herself in Div 2 with a second in the best nett, closely followed by Kay Harvey in fourth.  Billies Holmes, Kay and Lizzy Thomson also came away with raffle prizes. Well done Feilding Golf Club we look forward to next year’s event.

The next round is April 29 @Boulcott Farm.

The Rew McCracken was played at Castlepoint on Friday 12th April which was devastated by Cyclones last year. The course has recovered well but the lack of placing on very patchy fairways was challenging! Teams of 6 play best, combined Nett. Sadly, the cup was handed over to Riversdale. Thanks to our 6 players Jo-Anne, Alison, Karen, Sandra, Bindy McLeod, and Nicola who still travelled out there despite the inclement forecast!

Tilson was played on Sunday 14th April at Mahunga. Carol was impressive, down 3 with 3 to play and she went on to halve the match. Honor & Nicola battled against a golfer who could do no wrong and took advantage of all the shots she was being given!
