The golfing year is nearly over with Members only Xmas Cheer & Closing Day on Sunday and Smiddy’s Tournament next Thursday (15th).  If you are keen to play in either or both of these please let the office know – it really helps the match committee with organising  prizes and catering.

Tomorrow night (Wednesday) is the AGM starting at 5.30pm- relevant documentation has already been circulated – can you please let the office know of any apologies.

Tuesday Tome 29th November 2022

There has been a great response for entries to our Pro Am – the field is now full with a waiting list.

Results from last week:  Grumpies played a Stableford round with Tony Taylor leading the way with 38 points, Martin Napier 37, Malcolm Bridge and Andy Morison 36 points.  Kane Sim was the only person to get a two.

Thursday Club had a $10 tournament which had dinner vouchers donated by Parehua and meat packs donated by Trevor Petersen.  Prizes went down to 20th with Ju Allen first with 38 points on a countback from Trevor Petersen, 3rd Bob Schofield, 4th Robbie Robinson, 5th Nick Morison, 6th Sarah Monaghan, 7th Tony Taylor, 8th Bob Lindberg, 9th Bill Gordon, 10th Angela Busby, 11th Ed Brown, 12th Rob Smith, 13th George Kirk, 14th John Warner, 15th Rob Coy, 16th Kheinan Morrissey, 17th Paul Riddiford, 18th David Stevenson, 19th Raymond Matthews and 20th Neil McKirdy.  Twos went to John Warner and Rob Smith.  Longest drives:  Men 0-18 Jason Shaw, 19+ Greg Dalton, Ladies Angela Busby.  Nearest the pins:  #6 Wayne Phelps, #8 John Warner, #12 Bill Gordon and #16 Shayne Hammond.

On Sunday we held the Shoot Out finals.  The ladies winner was Bindy McLeod, 2nd Netia Morison, 3rd Lyle Griffiths and 4th Kris Chamberlain.  The mens winner was Trevor Petersen, 2nd Martin Napier, 3rd Colin Whibley-Smith and 4th Steve Croft.  Well done to everyone who played and thank you to those who came out the support the players.

There are a number of golfers out enjoying the sunshine today with conditions getting quite breezy which will hopefully keep any rain away.

This week Thursday Club is having a $10 tournament – everyone is welcome – please make sure you have your card in by midday for a 12.15pm tee off.  You can make up your own four or just go into the draw.

Sunday 4th December we are hosting the Masterborough Tournament – as we have managed to regain the Baarbraa Trophy, The Bidwill/Leckie Cup and the Lady Stout we need to make it four in a row.  Please let the office know if you are keen to play – registration is from 10.30am with an 11.30am tee off.

Wednesday 7th December it is the AGM which will be held in the clubhouse starting at 5.30pm – all financial members are welcome.

Sunday 11th December is our Xmas Cheer/Closing Day – more details to follow.

Results from last week:  Grumpies played a Stableford round with Mariana McDermott winning with 39 points, Ro Griffiths 38, Mary Isaac 37, Max Charmley (Dannevirke) and Seamus O’Sullivan 35 points.  Twos went to Ro Griffiths, Malcolm Wood, Paul Harris and Rick Hargreaves.

On Wednesday the ladies had a combined day and played a 10 hole fun competition followed by their Closing Day and AGM.

Thursday we held our Murray Halberg Day with the weather doing its best to spoil it for everyone.  The majority of the players were called in but unfortunately a few didn’t hear the hooter so completed their round and came in looking extremely soggy.  The raffle and auction were very well supported so thank you to everyone for your generosity.

On Saturday we hosted our 36 Hole Mixed 4Somes tournament.  The winners of the Gross were George Kirk & Pip Smith (172), 2nd Alex & Aimee Jones (Kapiti) (166) and 3rd Martin Napier & Debbie Donaldson (170).  The Nett winners were Pete Halstead and Mariana McDermott (141), 2nd Sandy Bidwill & Alison Tipler (143) and 3rd Garth Lippitt & Britta Fraser (Boulcott & Judgeford) (144).  Stableford winners were Trevor Petersen & Julie Weber (73), 2nd Steve & Anne Ricketts (Waikanae) (73) and 3rd Doug & Olivia Clark (71).  Nearest the pin in 2 on number 10 Doug Clark (am) and Nicky Stephenson (pm).

Sunday was the last Club competition of the year with Brian Russo taking the honours with 39 points, Blake Walker also on 39, Phil Eberlein 38 and Ed Brown 37 points.  Twos went to Jason Shaw, John Warner, Glenn Harper and Brian Russo.

Tuesday Tome 15th November 2022

Perfect conditions for golf today so there should be some good scores this afternoon from the Grumpies.

This Thursday is our Murray Halberg Day, cards in by 11.30am for a 12.00pm tee off, entry is $20 and there are raffles and an auction after golf.

On Saturday we are hosting our 36 Hole Mixed 4Somes – find a partner and get your entry in to the office.  Registration is 8.30am for a 9.00am tee off.

On Sunday 27th November we have the Shoot Out Final and we need a large trailer for the day – if you have one or know of someone who has one please let either Sandra Petersen or Pete Griffiths know.

Last Friday the Ladies hosted Royal Wellington Ladies to compete for the Lady Stout.  The day started with morning tea before golf which was followed by lunch.  The format of the competition was Stableford.  It has been a few years since we won the trophy but on Friday Royal Wellington had to leave it behind as the average score for Martinborough was 31.785 and Royal Wellington 29.666. Congratulations to all who played.

On Sunday the Royal Wellington men came over to compete for the Bidwill/Leckie Cup and enjoyed a light lunch before golf followed by dinner.  The format of the day was singles, 4BBB and an 8 ball with the final result Martinborough 33 Royal Wellington 15.  That’s what I call a convincing win!!

Last Tuesday the Grumpies played a Par round with Malcolm Wood leading the way on +3, Martin Napier, Pete Halstead and Mariana McDermott +2.  Twos went to Paul Harris (2), Malcolm Wood (2), Martin Napier, Wayne Phelps, Alan Isaac and Terry Blacktop.

On Wednesday the ladies played their 36 Hole Strokeplay Championship with Anna Possenniskie winning best gross, Kris Chamberlain 2nd.  Best Nett went to Bernadette Pitcher, Felicity Warren 2nd.  Twos went to Kris, Felicity, Bindy McLeod and Ju Allen.

On Thursday the winner was Shane Hislop with 37 points on a countback from Ed Elworthy and Malcolm Bridge, Trevor Petersen and Kris Chamberlain 36, Derek Stephens and Bob Tosswill both on 35 points.  Nearest the pin went to Ed Elworthy and twos went to Rob Lopez, Malcolm Bridge and Wayne Phelps.

On Saturday it was the last qualifying round for the Shoot Out final.  The winner was Jason Shaw with nett 70 and Guy Walmsley nett 72.  John Warner had 27 putts and there were no twos.

Tuesday Tome 8th November 2022

The course is looking stunning today and a number of Grumpies are out enjoying the fine weather.

Can I please remind those of you who won trophies last year to return them asap as they need to be engraved before Closing Day.

This Saturday is the final chance to get into the Shoot Out Final which will be played on Sunday 27th November.

On Sunday we are hosting Royal Wellington to contest the Bidwill/Leckie Cup – the course will be closed from 11.30am so if you intend to play in the morning you will need to be off the course by then.

Last Wednesday the 9 holers had their Shoot Out final with Debbie Coom winning from Jane Fanselow-Price 2nd, Sherryl Howie 3rd, Tania Williamson 4th, Jill Murphy 5th, Jo Guscott 6th, Pat Wood 7th, Kay Harvey 8th, Billie Holmes 9th and Michele Falleni 10th.

Not quite as many as usual playing on Thursday with Vern Anton winning with 36 points from Michael Tosswill also on 36, Duncan Didsbury, Ed Elworthy and Chris Handley all on 34 points.  Nearest the pin was Rob Keall (Manor Park) and there were no twos.

The finals of the Club Championships were played on Saturday, and the winners were:

Ladies:  Silvers:  Sandra Petersen beat Debbie Donaldson, Bronze A:  Julie Weber beat Marie Scrimshaw, Bronze B:  Karen Stephens beat Alison Tipler, Bronze A Plate:  Emily Loughnan beat Karen Shaw.

Men:  Seniors:  Tony Russo beat Troy Shaw, Intermediates:  Seamus O’Sullivan beat George Kirk, Juniors:  Dayle Scrimshaw beat Trevor Petersen.

Sunday was the penultimate Shoot Out qualifying round with Martin Napier leading the way on nett 72, Trevor Petersen 73 and Shayne Cater 74.  Twos went to Martin Napier, Trevor Petersen and myself.

Tuesday Tome 1st November 2022

We are getting to the busy time of year – Club Championship finals are this Saturday and it would be great to see members out supporting the finalists.  Tee off is from 8.30am with a short break for lunch followed by the second round.

If you have any trophies at home could you please return them to the club within the next week (preferably clean!!) so that we can arrange for them to be engraved ready for the next recipient.

Results from last week:   Grumpies played a Stableford round with Bob Schofield leading the way with 42 points, Chris Handley 38, Rick Hargreaves and Mariana McDermott 37 points.  Twos went to Andy Morison, Seamus O’Sullivan, Wayne Phelps and Tony Taylor.

On Wednesday the 9 holers played their Club Championship finals with Debbie Coom winning on the 17th hole against Jane Fanselow-Price in the A division and Kay Harvey won the B division against Jo Guscott.

The Ladies played a nett round last week with Ju Allen winning with a nett 66, Jaquee Reid  and Marilyn MacKenzie 70, Mary Isaac 71 and Adele Cairns nett 73.  Nearest the pins went to Diana Donald on #6 and Netia Morison on #8.  There were no twos.

Thursday Club winner last week was Arthur Warren with 40 points, Sandy Bidwill 38, George Kirk and Raymond Matthews 37 points.  Twos went to Troy Shaw, John Warner, Richard Thompson, Arthur Warren and Jason Shaw.  Nearest the pin was John Warner.

Saturdays competition was a Par round with Marilyn MacKenzie running away in first place on +8 from Alison Tipler on -1.  Marilyn was the only one to get a two.

On Sunday we hosted Eketahuna in the Baarbraa Trophy with the final result being Eketahuna 31.55 and Martinborough 31.61 and the trophy now has pride of place in the clubhouse.  Individual results were Emily Loughnan 44 points, Marilyn MacKenzie 41, Alison Tipler and Alec Dondertman 40, Netia Morison 39, David Cameron (Eke)38, Brett Abercrombie and Richard Hodge (Eke) 37 and Aage Terpstra (Eke) and Simon Buckley (Eke) 36 points.  Twos went to Paul Dickens (Eke), Andy Morison and Guy Walmsley.

Tuesday Tome 25th October 2022

The course is looking amazing at the moment – what a difference a week makes to the conditions underfoot.

Club Championship finals are rapidly approaching with matches due to be played on Saturday 5th November so if you are not playing why not come and support the finalists.

This Sunday we are hosting Eketahuna in the Baarbraa Trophy – this is a Stableford competition and the team with the best points average wins.  We have lost the last two rounds so it would be really good if we could bring the trophy back where it belongs.  Tee off is 11.30am – cards in by 11.00am please.

Onto results from last week:  there was a good turnout of Grumpies last week with the winner on the day being Jason Shaw with 39 points, Pete Price, Pete Halstead, Malcolm Bridge, Malcolm Wood, Ed Brown and John Warner all with 35 points.  Twos went to John Warner, Troy Shaw, Richards Thompson and Pete Price.

On Wednesday the 18 holers played a Stableford round with Marilyn MacKenzie winning on a countback with 35 points from Lyle Griffiths, Adele Cairns 33 and Julie Weber 32.  Nearest the pins went to Kelly Taylor on #6 and Lyle Griffiths on #8 – sadly there were no twos.

The 9 holers played their semi final matches of club championships.  Going through to the final are Debbie Coom and Jane Fanselow-Price in Division A and Jo Guscott will play Kay Harvey in Division B.  The plate winners are Billie Holmes Division A and Lizzy Thomson Division B.

There was a good turnout for Thursday Club with the ever colourful Bob Schofield leading the way with 41 points, Jackie Pope (Muriwai) and Sandra Petersen 37 and Raymond Matthews 36 points.  Twos went to Peter Schenk (2), Nick Allen, Jason Shaw, Brent Woodmiss (Mahunga) and Andy Morison.  Nearest the pin was Matt Thomas.

Saturdays competition was a Stableford round with Marilyn MacKenzie the winner with 41 points and there was only one two which went to Peter Schenk.

Sunday was also a Stableford round with a few more out playing.  Steven Croft was the winner with 41 points, Colin Whibley-Smith and Mark Mason 39 and Karen Stephens 37 points.  Twos went to Brett Abercrombie, Rob Lopez, Alec Dondertman and Karen Stephens.

The course is looking stunning in the sunshine today with over 30 Grumpies enjoying the conditions.

Sunday 30th October we are hosting the Baarbraa Trophy against Eketahuna – tee off will be 11.30am so please have your card in by 11.00am.

As the weather has improved over the last few days (and hopefully for longer) the course is getting busier so please make sure you book before you come down to play.

Results from last week:  Grumpies played a Par round with Brent McKinlay the clear winner on +7, Malcolm Wood all square, Ro Griffiths and Robbie Walters -1.   Twos were obviously very easy to get as there were 7 of them and they went to Alan Isaac, Pete Price, Tony Taylor, Brian Russo, Malcolm Wood, Seamus O’Sullivan and Brent McKinlay.

Last Wednesday the ladies who weren’t playing club champs played a Stableford round with Nicola Warren winning with 34 points, Katrina Burgess 32, Mary Isaac, Marilyn MacKenzie and Felicity Warren 31 points.  Nearest the pins went to Adele Cairns on #8, no one managed to hit the green on #6 and there were no twos.

Last Thursday’s winner was Shayne Hammond with 37 points on a countback from Stu Taplin, and Malcolm Wood 36 points.  Nearest the pin was David Kershaw and twos went to Wayne Wright, Chris Ranish and Alistair Boyne.

Saturday’s competition was a Par Round with Troy Shaw winning on +1 and Jason Shaw was -2.  Shayne Cater won the Birds Nest with 2 twos and John Warner, Troy Shaw and Robin Brasell also had twos.

On Sunday we hosted the Eastwood Motor Group Lamb & Chardonnay Ambrose.  The winning team with a net 57 was George Kirk, Brock Shute and Philippa & Andrew Smith, 2nd Seanoa Isaac, Duncan Didsbury, Blake Walker and Russell Hight (57.5), 3rd Jason Shaw, Brent McKinlay, Jack Allen and Josh Hawkins (58.12), 4th Alex Walters, Owen Lloyd, Tai Walters and Sam Iraia (58.25), 5th Ivan Karaitiana, Byron Karaitiana, Joseph Thompson and Antonia Thompson (58.25), 6th Jason Walker, Isaac Walker, Rodney Dravitzki and Damion Kauika (59), 7th Pete Griffiths, Whitney Griffiths, Paul McKenzie and Neil McKirdy (59.12), 8th Debbie Donaldson, Carl Donaldson, Martin Napier and Ben Stevenson (60.12), 9th Tim Fenwick, Kirk Saunders, Marc Jurlina and Kingi Kaiwai (60.37) and 10th Ju Allen, Nick Allen, Nicola Warren and Richard Warren (60.5).

It is good to see the course is slowly drying out – fingers crossed there isn’t too much rain before the Lamb & Chardonnay on Sunday.  For those of you playing on Sunday if you have any team changes please let me know before 5pm on Saturday.

On Sunday 30th October we are hosting the Baarbraa Trophy which is an annual competition played against Eketahuna.  More details nearer the time, but if you are keen to play please let me know.

On to the results from last week:  Grumpies had a good turnout with Pete Halstead winning on a countback with 35 points, 2nd Jason Shaw 35, Malcolm Wood also had 35 points.  Twos went to Malcolm Wood, Pete Halstead and Pete Price.

The Ladies played Par MSB with Ladies Captain, Sandra Petersen leading the way on -2, Julie Weber -5 and Bernadette Pither -6.  Nearest the pins went to Ju Allen on #8 – no one hit the green on #6 and there were no twos.

The 9 holers played their first round of Club Championships with Debbie Coom, Jane Fanselow-Price, Tania Williamson, Gaylene Selby Neal, Jo Guscott, Lizzy Thomson and Kay Harvey all going through to the next round.

On Thursday there were only a handful of players keen enough to play – the winner on the day was Mr Captain, Andy Morison, with 33 points from Jason Shaw also on 33 points.  The only two of the day went to Nick Morison and Andy was nearest the pin.

The weekend competitions were Shoot Out/Medal/Putting – can I please remind those of you that play that if you have not paid your $20 for Shoot Out then you are not eligible for the final.  Saturdays winner was John Warner with net 73, Jason Shaw 74 and Brent McKinlay 75.  Twos went to John and Brent and Brent won the putting with 27 putts.  Sunday Jason won with net 74, Chris Handley 75 and Brent McKinlay also on 75.  Twos went to Glenn Harper and Jason won the putting with 26 putts.

On Monday the 9 holers hosted their Open Day with a good field of 57 players.  The overall winner on the day was Billie Holmes with 16 points.  Division 1 – Alex Tomlinson (Masterton) 16, Iesha Adrian-Mansfield (Marton) 15 and Jill Murphy 14 points.  Division 2 Barbie Wallace (Masterton) 14 points, Opalle Weir (Marton) 12, Helen Ordish (Masterton) 12 and Jill Paterson (Paraparaumu) 12 points.  Mens Division was won by Brian Willis (Marton) 15 points, David Douglas (Levin) 15 and Napier McFedries (Otaki) 14 points.

This week I am starting with some not so good news – bar prices have been increased as of Monday 3rd October.

Unfortunately due to the weather we had to cancel the Mens 54/36 Hole Open so fingers crossed for the Lamb & Chardonnay which is now full.  For those of you who have entered can you please confirm team members if you haven’t already done so.

Next Monday we are hosting 9 Hole Open Day which has a good field entered.  This is a multi tee start so if you wish to have a casual round the course will be busy until about 1pm.

Results from last week:  Grumpies played Hidden Holes Stableford and the winner on a countback was Jason Shaw from Jason Burt with 26 points, Seamus O’Sullivan 25 and Terry Blacktop and Richard Thompson 24 points.  Twos went to Raymond Matthews and Andy Morison.

On Wednesday we hosted the Ladies Wairarapa 4BBB:  Gross winners were Philippa Smith & Amy Prince 78, 2nd Sereana Phillipps & Brenda Blatchford 84, 3rd Kay Wall & Fiona McBride 85 and 4th Lorraine Inglis & Jo Philps 86.  Nett winners were Nicola Warren & Sarah Broughton 64, 2nd Sarah Monaghan & Bernadette Pither 67, 3rd Carol Parkinson & Emily Loughnan 67 and 4th Jo Loe & Karen Shaw 68.  Nearest the pins went to Ju Allen #6, Lorraine Inglis #8, Carol Drink #12 and Lorraine Inglis #16.  Twos went to Mariana McDermott, Lorraine Inglis and Jo Loe.

The 9 holers had an away day at Judgeford where they played “Putting – with a twist”.  The winners with the highest score were Tingay Davidson and Michelle Fellini with 25 putts, Kay Harvey 24 and Lizzy Thompson 22.  Landing in the lake was the nearest the pin equivalent with 3 recipients, Michelle, Tingay and Debbie Coom.  They all had a great day and the café got the thumbs up for food and atmosphere.

Thursday Club should be renamed Glen Schofer day as he not only won the competition with 37 points but also got 2 twos and nearest the pin.  2nd was Stu Taplin also on 37 points, Nick Allen, Ro Griffiths and Chris Ranish all finished with 36 points.  The other nearest the pins went to Rob Lopez who also had 2 twos, Sandra Petersen, John Thomson and Jason Shaw who eagled #14.
