Tuesday Tome 20th September 2022

It is good to see a number of Grumpies out enjoying the warmer weather this afternoon – fingers crossed it stays that way for the rest of the week.

This Sunday is the AB Martin Mixed 4Somes and it would be lovely to see a few more couples playing.  At the moment I have two gentlemen looking for partners, so ladies if you are keen to play give me a call.

The following weekend is the Mens 54/36 Hole Open and I don’t see too many of you with names down for this – this is a great tournament with loads of banter and laughter and with the added bonus of the Calcutta to peak everyones interest.

Entries are rolling in for the Lamb & Chardonnay so if you want to play get your name/team in as soon as possible.

Carol has a couple of Club jerseys looking for homes – mens XXXL and ladies size 16 – if you are keen to purchase one of them call the office.

Tuesday Tome 13th September 2022

There was no Tuesday Tome last week as I was taking a break from the office.

It was good to see carts back out on the course at the end of last week – shame the weather had to spoil it over the weekend.

Can I please remind all members that the only time you can practice on the course before a round is if you are playing matchplay.  It has been noted that some of you are practising on the 18th green before going out to play Thursday Club.

Coming up this weekend we are hosting the Martinborough School Ambrose on Saturday morning so the course will be closed until early/mid afternoon and on Sunday Wellington Golf are holding their half yearly meeting followed by golf  with approximately 70 players and multiple tees will be used so if you are going to be playing you will need to be patient because it could be slow.

Sunday 25th September is the AB Martin Mixed Foursomes (otherwise known as the Mixed Divorcesomes!!) – this is a fun event and there are always a number of amusing  stories to be told afterwards – please let me know if you wish to play  – if you need a partner let either Carol or myself know and we will endeavour to find someone for you.

Tuesday Tome 23rd August 2022

It is very pleasant to be looking out of the office window and not watching the rain come down.  The course is open for play but extreme caution is still needed as there are still some very wet areas to be negotiated.  With this in mind please try to avoid taking trundlers through wet areas and also please do not take them across tees or close to the greens.

The AB Martin Mixed Foursomes is being played on Sunday 25th September so please send your entries to:  entries@martinboroughgolfclub.co.nz  and also Martinborough School 150th Year Celebration Ambrose Golf Tournament is being held here on Saturday 17th September for details go to:  https://martinborough-school-150th-year-celebration.lilregie.com

Sunday 4th September is the Mens 36 Hole Strokeplay Championship – sheet is up on the noticeboard if you wish to enter.

Before I give the results for last week below is a gentle reminder regarding tee bookings:

DotGolf tee bookings

As members think ahead to booking their next game at Martinborough, it may be useful to some to go over the different ways that tee times can be booked. First, you can ring the office and ask to be booked in from there. Or you may wish to book on-line. Please note – there are several options to go about this and you need to be aware of the differences.

  1. Booking from the Martinborough Golf Club website (martinboroughgolfclub.co.nz): this takes you straight to the Golf NZ booking page for Martinborough.
  2. Booking directly on the Golf NZ website (golf.co.nz): you need to select Martinborough (or wherever you wish to play) first.
  3. Book via the DotGolf app – if you need to find it in Play Store (or equivalent) and install it, it is the app that is in a blue circle with the dG symbol in white writing.

Using websites – it is important to note that the websites are designed to show what slots are AVAILABLE to book NOT what IS booked. If you are on your computer screen, you can easily see the tee times for any particular day and what spaces are available, right across the maximum four slots per tee time. If you are on your phone (or a device with limited screen space) you need to take care as you will not see all four slots. Scroll across to check the tee time you are considering to book. You must do this to avoid booking yourself in with others that have already taken up one or two slots on a tee booking time unless you are purposefully wishing to join with them to play.

Using the app – this is very user friendly. Once you have selected the course and date, you have the option of seeing either all the available slots (coloured green), or if any of your DotGolf friends have booked in and have spaces to play with them, or all of the above.

Last week I forgot to give the results from the previous weekend so Saturday 13th August was a Stableford round and Phil Collins won on a countback with 35 points from Colin Whibley-Smith and there were no twos.  On Sunday 14th another Stableford round was played with Malcolm Wood winning with 34 points from Doug Clark on 30.  Malcolm and Doug were the only ones to get a two.

There was a good turnout of Grumpies on Tuesday with the Club Captain leading the way with 37 points, Bill Gordon and Greg Dalton 36, Brent McKinlay 35 and Rob Smith and Kane Sim 33 points.  Twos went to Tony Taylor and Arthur Warren.

On Wednesday the Ladies played HPMC (Stableford) with Julie Weber winning with 34 points from Carol Parkinson on 33 and Jane Terpstra on 31 points.  Nearest the pins went to Julie Weber on #6 and Carol on #8 – Carol also got the only two of the day.

The 9 Holers had a Putting round with Sherryl Howie and Debbie Coom sharing the honours with 17 putts, Jill Murphy 18 and Mary Herrick 19 putts.  Nearest the pins went to Sandy Burgess on #8 and Ali Russell on #16.

Not quite as many as usual playing on Thursday and it seemed to be Chris Ranish’s day as he won the competition with 37 points, got nearest the pin and had 2 x twos.  Tony Taylor had 36 points along with Brent McKinlay and Jason Shaw had 35 points.  Matt Thomas and Sandra Petersen also got twos.

The competitions at the weekend were Shoot Out/Medal/Putting with Josh Hawkins winning on Saturday with nett 73.  Brent McKinlay won the putting with 27 putts and there were no twos.

On Sunday Derek Stephens won with nett 71, Jason Burt 73 and Malcolm Wood 74.  Derek won the putting with 23 putts.  Phil Eberlein and Emily Loughnan both had twos and Jason Burt will be a very happy man as he won the Birds Nest with 2 x twos.

That’s it from me for this week.

Tuesday Tome 16th August 2022

This week we start with some very exciting news – last Sunday was the final round of the Marquis Shield and going into it our boys were equal first with Eketahuna and Pahiatua in the Marquis Shield and in the Sutherland Trophy  half a point behind Pahiatua.  In the end the Shield was won by half a point from Pahiatua and the Trophy by half a point from Pahiatua.  The Marquis Cup (Off Stick Singles Wins) was also won by half a point.  A great result so congratulations to each and every one of you who played for the team this season.

Course is once again open and here’s hoping that we don’t get too much rain this week.  On Sunday morning we have a large group booked in to play from 8.30am off multiple tees but hopefully this won’t affect those of you who wish to play later in the day.

That’s all for this week – very short and sweet.

Kris

Tuesday Tome 9th August 2022

Another rainy day in the Wairarapa and I am looking out at an extremely wet golf course.

Last week it dried out enough for the course to be open and on Tuesday a dozen Grumpies went out to play.  The wet conditions obviously didn’t bother Bill Gordon as he was the winner with 35 points on a countback from Paul Riddiford,  Tony Taylor was 3rd with 30 points.  Bill was the only person who managed to get a two.

On Wednesday the Ladies played a Stableford round with Sandra Petersen winning with 30 points, Ju Allen 27, Jenny Wilkie 26 and Nicola Warren 25.  No one managed to hit the green on #6 and nearest the pin on #8 went to Angela Busby.  Julie Weber was the only one to get a two.

On Thursday there were a few more out playing with Tony Taylor taking the money with 38 points, Ro Griffiths 36, Glen Schofer and Doug Clark 34.  Nearest the pin went to Andy Morison and twos were had by Rob Smith, Darren Bevan, Chris Ranish and Nick Allen.

The competitions at the weekend were both Par and Chris Ranish took the money on Saturday on -1.  On Sunday Tora Boyne was the winner on +2, Phil Eberlein +1, Terry Fraei and Josh Hawkins -1.  Twos went to Phil and Malcolm Wood.

That’s all for this week – an update on the course will be sent out later this week.

Kris

Tuesday Tome 26th July 2002

Another very soggy start to the week – course is now closed until further notice.

Can I please remind those of you who play on the weekend that if you are not entered in the competition to please press NO for the competition – remember – read the screen!!!

Results from last week:  Grumpies had a good turnout last Tuesday with the colourful Bob Schofield taking the money with 38 points, Sandy Bidwill, Bill Gordon, Andy Morison and Rob Lopez all on 35 points.  Twos went to Kane Sim and Jason Shaw and Ed Brown won the Martinborough Brewery voucher for nearest the pin on #8.

On Wednesday 15 intrepid ladies played a Shoot Out/Medal/Putting round with Nicola Warren leading the way with nett 78 from Ju Allen 79 and Lyle Griffiths and Adele Cairns nett 80.  Office buddy Carol Parkinson was the only one to get a two and nearest the pins went to Bindy McLeod on #6 and Carol on #8.  Bindy also won the putting with 28 putts on a countback.

Rain stopped play on Thursday as course was unplayable.

Competitions for the weekend were Stableford with Malcolm Bridge winning on Saturday with 32 points.  Sunday had a slightly larger field with Malcolm Wood winning with 35 points from Sheldon McNamara, Josh Hawkins, Brian Russo and Terry Fraei all on 34 points.  There wasn’t a single two to be had over the weekend.

That’s it for another week.

Kris

Tuesday Tome 19th July 2022

It looks as if there are going to be a few Grumpies out playing today – there are a number of black clouds around but they seem to be bypassing us so hopefully they will manage to stay dry.

With regards to the course we have received a number of complaints about divots not being replaced and pitchmarks not being repaired.  Can I please remind you that it is every players responsibility to replace divots and repair pitchmarks and, whilst I’m on the subject, it is also your responsibility to rake the bunker after you have been in it.  I realise that it is not only members failing to do these things but every divot replaced and every pitchmark repaired helps to maintain the course to a high standard.  Here endeth the lesson!!!!

On Monday 1st August we have a group of ladies from the South Island coming to play and we are in need of trundlers, so if you have a spare trundler or are happy to lend yours for the day please let me know as soon as possible.

On to results from last week:  Grumpies didn’t play last week and neither did the Ladies on Wednesday.

Thursday Club had a reasonable number out playing with Doug Clark taking the money with 42 points from Davis Lester Clarke 37, Brian Russo, Malcolm Wood, Rob Lopez and Sandra Petersen all on 36 points.  Twos went to Malcolm Wood (2), Ailsa Malneek, Brian Russo, Darren Bevan and Seamus O’Sullivan.  The Martinborough Brewery voucher for nearest the pin went to Darren Bevan.

The weekend competitions were Shoot Out/Medal/Putting with Colin Whibley-Smith winning on Saturday with a nett 70, Chris Ranish 71 and Rob Lopez 75.  Putting went to Chris Ranish with 26 putts.  There were no twos on Saturday.  On Sunday the winner was Jason Shaw nett 72 on a countback to Doug Clark, Rob Lopez 73 and Mark Lucock and Derek Stephens both with nett 75.  Twos went to Olivia Clark, Doug Clark and Dayle Scrimshaw.  Derek Stephens won the putting on a countback with 27 putts.

That’s it for this week – short and sweet.

Kris

This weekend is the final round of Marquis Shield where the men are playing at Pahiatua against Masterton – good luck guys and it would be good if you could bring some silverware home!!!

That’s it for another week.

Tuesday Tome 28th June 2022

A cool grey day out on the course today but that doesn’t seem to have deterred the Grumpies.

Carts are still not allowed on the course but hopefully over the next couple of days that will change – an email will be sent out informing you when they can go out again.

When you book a tee time (particularly at the weekend) by all means come early for a warm up/practice but please do not expect to go before your allotted tee time.

Results from last week:  Grumpies played a Stableford round with Mr Captain, Andy Morison, taking the money with 36 points, closely followed by Rob Lopez 35 and Sandy Bidwill 34 points.  Twos went to Malcolm Bridge and Rob Lopez who also got closest to the pin.

On Wednesday the Ladies played HPMC (Stableford) with office buddy Carol Parkinson winning with 32 points from Angela Busby, Jenny Wilkie and Sherry Weatherstone all on 30 points.  Twos went to Sherry and Angela and nearest the pin on #6 was Angela and on #8 Sherry.

On Sunday we hosted Marquis Shield with our team playing Mahunga.  Wins in the singles matches went to Jason Shaw, Doug Clark, Peter Gray, Shane Hartnell and Tora Boyne and halves going to Glenn Harper and Paul McKenzie.  In the fourball matches wins went to Peter Gray and Malcolm Bridge, Tora Boyne and Glenn Harper and Shane Hartnell and Paul McKenzie halved their match.  With one round left to play it is very tight at the top of the leaderboard with our boys needing a good result in the final round.

That’s all for this week – fingers crossed for some drier/warmer weather.
