MARTINBOROUGH GOLF REPORT
BY JENNY BOYNE
This past week the spotlight has been on Mornington Golf Course, and fortunately for the Wellington District Interclub teams the Wellington Mayor has come out in support of keeping it to its 18 hole status for the time being. Its a tricky course with abundant hills and if you stray you are definitely in the wilderness. Playing the hosts at home the selector was very happy with the teams play. Wins in the singles matchplay to Sheldon McNamara 5/3, Randal Warner 3/2, Derek Stephens 3/2, Gavin Lovejoy 2 Up, Chris Ranish and Glen Schofer both all square. The four ball was oh so very close with Chris Ranish and Colin Whibley-Smith, Randal Warner and Gavin Lovejoy and Derek Stephens and Alistair Boyne all finishing up all square.
Opening round of Riverside Cup last Friday was played at Eketahuna against Masterton. Wins to Honor Clark 2 Up, Jo Loe and Angela Busby 1 Up. A great start to the season.
The Lansdowne trophy team more than made up for their heavy losses the week before at Manor Park against Shandon. On Saturday the gals played Boulcott Heritage Farm at Shandon and had wins in the foursomes to Anita Karaitiana and Wendy Rhodes 2 up and Pip Kirk and Sereana Phillipps 5/4. Zhuoyi Hu and Cheycoda Cocks narrowly losing their tussle at the top on the last hole. Player of the day went to Wendy Rhodes needing only a tee for 12 holes dismissed her opponent in singles matchplay 7/6. Zhuoyi Hu 4/2, Anita Karaitiana 1 Up and Pip Kirk all square.
The Tuesday grumpies had good weather and sizzling scores. Phil Reid was on fire winning the Stableford Comp with 46pts. 2nd Terry Blacktop on 42, 3rd Alan Yates, Peter Price and Tom Bunny on 40pts.
When not watching her son play cricket Jan Ferguson retreats to Nine hole golf and on Wednesday found herself in the winners circle for the second time in recent weeks winning the Stableford Comp with 22 points. 2nd Leonie Wilde with 17 pts on a count back to Katrina Burgess on a c/b to Sherryl Howie. Katrina also took home the All Teed Up NTP on Number 8.
Next Wednesday 21st March is Cartertons Womens Open day, always fun.
